The NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) and Famicom (Family Computer) were Nintendo’s 8‑bit home consoles, released in Japan in 1983 and in North America in 1985. They shared the same hardware architecture, so games made for one could be played on the other, though some had regional differences. Super Mario Bros. released on the Famicom in 1983 and NES in 1985. The NES version was a direct port with some graphical and sound refinements.

Super Mario Bros. 2 released in Japan on the Famicom in 1986 (as Super Mario Bros. 2: Super Mario USA in North America) and in North America in 1987. The Famicom version was a harder, more challenging remake. Super Mario Bros. 3 released on the Famicom in 1988 and NES in 1990, featuring the iconic “Super Mario Bros. 3” gameplay with the Super Mushroom and 100% completion mode. Mario Bros. the arcade game’s Famicom port came out in 1983, with differences from the arcade, such as Mario’s red hat, Luigi’s new color scheme, and altered sound effects.
